funny post I stole from another blogger

You know Korea is your home when...

You're no longer tempted to reach into the fish tanks outside of restaurants and grab one.
When you instinctively know which can is for trash and which is for recycled.
All the palaces look alike.
When you don't move for the car but you move for the motorcycle.
When Korean women stop looking anorexic.
When you accept Konglish and stop trying to fix it.
Going to Itaewon is a culture shock.
When pink isn't just for girls anymore.
When you look both ways before crossing the sidewalk.
When toilet paper isn't just used in the bathroom.
When you have mastered the Korean squat.
If you prefer the Korean squat toilet to the Western-style toilet.
You're no longer surprised by the TV's in vending machines, buses, or subways.
You can actually make a call while on the subway, in the subway station, in the elevator, or while on water.
When kids walking or riding the subway by themselves no longer worries you.
When an American holiday passes and you barely even notice.
Seeing a woman wearing flat shoes almost looks weird.
You chase the guys in suits away to sit in the plastic chairs outside of convenience stores.
You understand Konglish better than English.
If you've ever had more than one 'dangly' thing on your cell phone.
Can instinctively find the English language section in any bookstore.
Watching drunk ajosshis stumble down the street is a form of entertainment.
American businesses around you (Starbucks, McDonalds, Burger King) stop surprising you.
If you play with the Korean kids without a second thought.
You miss the freedom and sensation of driving, but wouldn't dare to drive in Korea.
Hearing any language other than Korean or English almost shocks you.
You've ever thought about marrying a Korean just to get the F-2 visa.
If you can name three Korean newspapers in English
If you've figured out how to eat cake with chopsticks.
Your English has actually gotten worse while in Korea.
You stop picking off corn on a pizza.
You become immune to the ajumma stare.

Bali, work and Esther!!

Hello Everyone! Happy Friday!
I’m sorry I haven’t updated this blog in awhile… Between work, play and facebook I have no time for the blog. So… What has happened in the last month? Um… Esther came to visit, work, and I went to Bali!

My college roommate Esther came to visit from Cali… Although I had to work while she was here, I got to show her around Korea a bit.. It was just nice to see someone from home! She went out on her own almost every day while I worked… After work we went to dinner every night and met up with Alex once.

Work,,, What can I say? Well… Work is work.. This is really the easiest job I have ever had! The only thing that is difficult is the constant change!!! As some of you know, in January we had to rewrite the new textbook.. After hours and hours of planning and putting the stupid book together, our boss now says that she “is very sorry to us but……” no more English Land…. Great…. So we are starting a whole new system… It starts in September so I hope it will stick around more than the previous one. Our school is basically crumbling.. The Director an owner has never taught or run a school before. I think this is common in Korea. This woman can’t even speak English… Well… yes she can… But not very well… She has 2 sons in boarding school in the UK so she thinks she is an expert. Anyways… I finish my contract with Kang’s at the end of October… So I can hang in here for a few more months… A friend of mine is a recruiter.. so we have been looking for jobs for a while now… I will try to finalize a new contract by the end of this month…

Bali!!!!
Bali was wonderful! I was only there for 3 days but it was great! We did a lot of shopping, eating and of course the beach! I can’t believe how much I miss the beach! The beach was not as beautiful as I imagined but it was great to be in the water again. Kristina says that Hawaii is nicer! I can’t wait to see it! Anyways… Everything in Bali was sooo cheap! American food is soo expensive in Korea! A club sandwich in Korea can cost you about $15-20 but in Bali is was $5! We did have some local food but I was thrilled to be eating American food! I had steak, fajitas, etc…. yum yum yum! I bought a few dresses, some great traditional art and jewelry... I wish I could have been there for a few more days but I guess I got a taste of Bali and I can always go back!

Well.. I hope everyone is surviving in America… I watch CNN news as I get ready for work in the morning… Crazy stuff happening all over! It’s hard not being home when things are happening there like weddings and babies being born!!!! Please send me pictures!! Welll back to teaching! Have a great weekend! Love Always, Abby

Hello Everyone!

Hi!!! I'm sorry it has been so long since my last post. Thank you to everyone who checks this blog and patiently waits for new posts... So much has been happening here in Korea. I'm sure ya'll have heard some of it on the news... maybe not... where do I begin. Mom spent about 9 days in Korea... It was alot of fun! We packed everyday with tourist stuff, working, moving, etc... Ya... moving... I think a few of you have seen my new apartment on video but if not I posted a few pics here... FYI.. I did not clean for the photo shoot. The new apartment is better and worse than the old apt in many ways. It is smaller, it has a bigger bathroon with a shower door, less kitchen storage, an empty loft, and a bedroom. Instead of a studio, it is a one bedroom. The bedroom is separated by a sliding door which is nice because I can close it. Honey likes the new place... (check out his new collar in the pics below! Thank you Alana!) He is scared of the loft but then again so am I.... The stairs are really narrow and the ceiling is very low so you can't stand up.... It's really meant for a sleeping space but I like the bedroom with a door better... maybe I will try to sleep up there one night...
Work is still work. this week was offically my 7th month in Korea... only 5 more to go.... I am teaching all the EV classes this term. So that means I more or less teach the same classes everyday. My students from 4-7or8 come everyday. Instead of having both me and a Korean teacher, they only have me... My students are great! I'm really looking forward to July. Although I will be very sad to see my 2 of my coworkers go, we will get 2 new ones... July also will be exciting because i'm going to Bali. July 29th-August 3rd is my summer break. I'mn looking forward to the monkey beach/cave? and laying out on the beach. I am going with kristina, jenn, katie and kristina's brother Justin. I am so excited!
Summer is also the time for guests! Esther is coming in 2 weeks! Krash is coming at the end of August! I'm happy to have my sisters come share korea with me! I think Sara is even thinking about coming in March of 2010!
The way pictures are uploaded on this blog is very strange. I have no idea which picture is which so I can't write captions easily. One of the pictures is of a meat stand at a local market. Look closely. Yes! Those are tails with fur still attached... I'm not sure what it is used for but I had to take a picture!
Did ya'll hear about the pig flu in Korea? A group of new teachers came over in May and brought the flu with them... One of the teachers infected was a new teacher in my town, actually teaching at a school called CDI about 5 minutes from my school. CDIs were closed all over Korea and we prayed that they would shut us down too but no luck there.... About 30 teachers were quarintened for about a week. Teachers were blogging and the stories were very interesting. I started to feel really sick at that same time with a fever and cold symptoms but it cleared up quickly. Just overworked and underpaid I guess...
North Korea.. North Korea... North Korea... they need to sit in the Krash box for a while. Causing so much trouble and worry.. No one actually worries about north Korea here... Well... not really... When I ask my Korean Coworkers they just roll their eyes and tell me that the North prez is crazy. I think this is true. So to everyone who is worried... Don't worry... I think i'm just as safe here as I would be in the US...
Korean School... As some of you know I have been working on learning Korean... I am not very good at it but I just finsihed my first term of classes... I try to study about 2 hours a week in addition to the 2 hours of class on Saturday but I'm not very good about going to class... I offically can read... wooohoo.. I don't understand anything I'm reading but i'm slowly memorizing vocabulary... I know the basics....

Well... I think everyone is caught up.... I better spell check this thing because i'm pretty tired as I type this... Sorry for errors... gosh.... What do you think I am? An English teacher? o.... lolol.... I can't use that excuse anymore... I love you all!

Korea in the Spring

Hi everyone!
Thank you for continuing to follow my blog! I'm not very good at posting but ya'll are such devoted fans! lol... So Spring is here! It is so great! I love the weather! It is finally starting to warm up! We have a few days of cold then a few days of warm weather... I will take it! A few days a week of warmer weather is better than none at all.... Honey is loving the warm weather too! He loves walks in the park! He had a little trouble today... I took him to the korean "walmart" to get a nice bath and hair cut but his hair was so tangled that they had to shave him :( now he has a little ball of fur on his tail and a little fur on his ears and nose... It looks terrible but all of my friends are telling me that it will grow back quickly... I hope so...
Anyways... This week I have alot on my plate.. I am not only finishing the school term but I am also covering a few of my coworker's classes too... I am also getting ready for my mom's trip! She is coming on Thursday which is in less than 48 hours... OMG... It will be a holiday in Korea so I won't have to work! woohoo! I think I have the iternerary figured out... We are going to a few traditional korean tourist destibnations as well as a festival and quite a few places that i've been wanting to visit for months...
More crazy news... I'm moving... sigh... I will be moving to a building where all of my other coworkers live... It is closer to my school and the middle of town... I will post with pics and more info later... I really hate moving... I am going to hire a mover so I don't have to do it all myself...
well... I think ya'll are caught up.... 6 months down... 6 more months to go...
